Hacienda La Danesa is more than a destination—it’s the result of decades of vision, patience, and deep respect for the land. We sat down with Niels Olsen to talk about the journey behind it.
Q1. What is your earliest memory of Hacienda La Danesa?
My earliest memories are simple—running freely, being close to animals, and feeling that the farm was a world of its own. It wasn’t luxury then. It was home. It was hanging out with my mom, dad and siblings.
Q2. When did you first see its potential as a hospitality project?
It came much later. After traveling and studying abroad in the United States and Australia, I realized that what we had wasn’t just a farm—it was an experience people were searching for.
Q3. What was the biggest challenge in transforming the farm?
Patience… and lots of discussions with mom and dad. Building something meaningful takes time. Every detail—from architecture to service—had to feel authentic.
Q4. How would you describe the philosophy behind La Danesa?
Respect for the land, simplicity, and beauty in the everyday.
Q5. Why was it important to keep it a working farm?
Because that’s the soul of the place. Without it, it would just be another hotel.
Q6. What role does food play in the experience?
Everything starts with food. It connects guests to the land in the most immediate way.
Q7. What makes La Danesa different from other luxury destinations?
It doesn’t try too hard. It’s honest. It’s family owned. We treat our guests as our family and friends.
Q8. How has your family influenced the project?
In every way. This place is built on generations of care. My mom and I share the same passion for design while my dad and I share the same passion for agriculture and hospitality.
Q9. What detail are you most proud of?
That guests feel something real when they’re here and the friends that I have made along the way.
Q10. What has surprised you most about guests’ reactions?
How quickly they slow down.
Q11. What does success look like for you today?
Creating something that lasts.
Q12. How do you see La Danesa evolving in the next 10 years?
Expanding thoughtfully—never losing its essence.
Q13. What do you hope guests take with them when they leave?
A sense of calm—and a deeper connection to nature.
